Medical Aid Schemes that Cover Tuberculosis

TuberculosisTuberculosis, or TB, is one of the most common infectious diseases in South Africa. It’s particularly rampant in people with HIV/Aids as their immune systems are compromised.

The South African government has rolled out free TB testing and treatment at clinics throughout the country. Additional services include the design of an appropriate diet plan and expert information and advice by qualified healthcare professionals.

Tuberculosis is curable, but effective care involves prolonged treatment schedules comprising multiple drugs.

Medical aid scheme coverage of TB-related costs

Despite government intervention, pulmonary tuberculosis is a condition that qualifies for Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs). As such Medical aid schemes will cover hospital admissions where applicable.

We focus on low cost hospital plans offered by two well know medical aid schemes in South Africa:

Liberty Medical Scheme

Liberty Medical Scheme offers three hospital plans ranging from the entry level Hospital Select to the Hospital Plus. In-hospital benefits are commensurate with the level of cover you can afford. You will, however, have to use a network hospital in the Hospital Select option.

Hospital Select and Hospital Standard offer unlimited benefits at 100% of the scheme rate, while Hospital Plus offers unlimited cover for GPS and specialist consultations at 200% of the Liberty rate.

In all three cases, co-payments may apply and all provide the same additional benefits that include access to an unlimited 24 hour emergency service!

Discovery Health

Discovery Health offers an extensive portfolio of medical aid plans arranged in a number of series or bundles, all of which include traditional hospital plans.

The KeyCare series – KeyCare Plus, KeyCare Access and KeyCare Core – are the most affordable options  for low income earners. All provide unlimited cover at the KeyCare network of hospitals and healthcare providers.
