In the case of income-based medical aid options, membership costs are proportional to income. This means that certain cheaper medical aids are not available to high-income earners.

Medical Aid Plans Under R2000 Per Month


Bestmed - BEAT 1 Network

The same as the BEAT 1 plan but with the choice of hospitals limited to those in a designated network and lower monthly contributions. The plan offers extensive private hospital cover at network hospitals and a range of preventive care benefits, including cover for flu vaccines, contraception and mammograms.

Bonitas - BonCap

Affordable, income-based medical aid. The BonCap plan features unlimited hospital cover at 100% of the Bonitas rate and unlimited GP consultations, subject to using network providers.

There’s also limited cover for out-of-network and specialist consultations.

Bonitas - BonEssential Select

Network hospital cover with value-added benefits. Cheaper than a non-network plan, the BonEssential Select hospital plan covers unlimited hospitalisation at any hospital in the Bonitas network, at 100% of the scheme's rate.

It also offers specific maternity, child care and preventative care benefits.

Bonitas - BonStart

Entry-level medical aid for young, single individuals.

The BonStart plan provides unlimited hospital cover at network hospitals, and cover for GP and dental consultations (subject to a co-payment per visit). It also provides limited cover for preventative care and wellness screening.

Bonitas - BonStart Plus

Entry-level medical aid for young couples looking to expand their families. BonStart Plus provides unlimited hospital cover at network hospitals, cover for GP and dental consultations (subject to a co-payment per visit) and limited cover for preventative care and wellness screening.

With the Plus option, monthly contributions are slightly higher. In return, co-payments for consultations are 50% lower than on the BonStart plan, cover is included for specialist consultations and certain benefits are more generous.

Momentum - Custom Option

The Momentum Custom Option hospital plan offers cover for unlimited hospitalization at a provider of your choice. Major medical benefits require a co-payment of R1 300, except for maternity confinements, car accidents and emergency treatments. This is a flexible option that allows members to add savings through the health saver.

Discovery Health - Essential Delta Core Network

An economical network hospital plan, plus essential cover for chronic medication. The Essential Delta Core plan covers private hospitalisation subject to use of a hospital in the Delta network, with cover for in-hospital specialists at up to 100% of the Discovery rate.

It also provides full cover for approved chronic medication, subject to use of a MedXpress pharmacy. The plan doesn’t include day-to-day benefits.

Discovery Health - Essential Dynamic Smart Plan

The same benefits as the Essential Smart plan but subject to use of private hospitals in the Essential Dynamic Smart Hospital Network and as referred by Ask Discovery (and with a lower monthly contribution).

The plan combines full cover for private hospitalisation at a network hospital (with cover for in-hospital specialists at up to 100% of the Discovery rate) and cover for chronic medication for conditions on the Chronic Disease List (CDL) subject to use of a MedXpress pharmacy.

Discovery Health - Essential Smart Plan

Cost-effective medical aid, combining full cover for private hospitalisation at a network hospital (with cover for in-hospital specialists at up to 100% of the Discovery rate); cover for chronic medication for conditions on the Chronic Disease List (CDL) subject to use of a MedXpress pharmacy; and a range of day-to-day benefits.

Fedhealth - FlexiFED 1 Elect Network Fixed Option

Affordable, entry-level hospital plan with unlimited hospital cover at Fedhealth’s network of hospitals, plus unlimited GP visits, cover for female contraception and day-to-day savings.

With the flexiFED 1 Elect medical aid plan, you pay up to 25% lower monthly contributions in return for choosing to pay a co-payment for planned procedures in hospital.

Fedhealth - FlexiFed 1 Network Flexible Option

FlexiFed 1 Network Flexible Option is ideal for anyone who’s young, healthy and single. It offers unlimited hospital benefits at network hospitals, at an affordable rate.

There’s also a FlexiFed Elect Flexible Option. This limits members to using specific Elect network hospitals and features lower monthly contributions.

Health Squared - Foundation

Affordable, income-based medical aid with unlimited hospitalisation at network providers; limited cover for GP and specialist visits; cover for 29 chronic conditions; 24/7 emergency medical assistance; and free flu and child vaccinations.

Resolution Health - Hospital

The Resolution Health hospital plan provides comprehensive in-hospital benefits at 100% of the scheme's rate, unlimited private hospitalization at any hospital in South Africa and a casualty benefit for emergencies.

Momentum - Incentive Option

The Momentum Incentive Option provides unlimited private hospitalization and average day-to-day cover. You can choose providers and a savings of 10% of contributions is allocated for day-to-day expenses.

Momentum - Ingwe Option

Students need to pay a minimum of 6 months in advance for the scheme to activate membership. Discovery Health - Keycare Core

Suitable for those who want a cost-effective hospital plan with limited cover.

Discovery Health - KeyCare Start

Discovery Health KeyCare Start is a low-cost, income-based plan that's ideal for entry-level consumers. It includes cover for private hospitalisation at hospitals in the KeyCare Start network, network GP visits and cover for two specialist visits (if referred by a network GP).

The plan also includes cover for certain procedures at network day surgeries. Cancer treatment, dialysis and chronic medication are covered only at state facilities.

Genesis - MED-100

An affordable hospital plan that covers private hospital care at any hospital (no networks) and that includes generous cover for basic dentistry.

The MED-100 plan covers in-hospital doctors and specialists at up to 100% of the scheme rate.

Medshield - MediCurve

Affordable medical aid for young, healthy individuals, with apps for managing almost all aspects of membership online. The MediCurve option features unlimited hospital cover at 100% of Medshield’s rate, cover for 26 chronic conditions and limited cover for GP and specialist consultations, subject to use of network providers.

Medshield - MediPhila

Medshield Mediphilia is designed for low-income earners and comprises in-hospital and day-to-day benefits covered at network providers only. The plan provides unlimited hospital cover for Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs) and generous limits, per beneficiary, for non-PMB treatment in hospital. Day-to-day benefits are paid from the out of hospital limit. These cover GP and specialists visits, acute medicines, casualty and emergency services, basic dentistry, optometry, radiology and pathology, up to prescribed limits.

Medihelp - MedVital Elect

The MedVital plan but subject to use of healthcare providers in the MedVital network and with contributions as much as 25% lower. Includes basic cover, subject to limits, for private hospitalisation, emergency medical services and minor medical expenses, as well as a range of preventive care and health screening benefits.

Health Squared - Millennium Select

The Millennium Select option provides the same, comprehensive benefits as Health Squared’s Millennium plan. However, it limits you to accessing benefits from the scheme’s wide network of providers and, in return, features lower monthly premiums. Some features of the Millennium Select option are free cover for your third and any subsequent children, an advanced dentistry benefit, extensive preventative care benefits and cover for 59 chronic conditions, including ADHD and allergic rhinitis.

Bestmed - RHYTHM 1

Affordable, income-based medical aid for those comfortable with using designated service providers. Includes basic cover for hospitalisation at network hospitals (up to prescribed minimum benefits or, for some benefits, at 100% of the scheme rate); limited cover for GP visits, specialist visits (subject to referral) and basic dentistry; and preventative care benefits, including vaccines and contraception.

Health Squared - Rise

Affordable medical aid that’s suitable for young, generally healthy individuals, with unlimited private hospitalisation at designated service providers (DSPs). Health Squared’s Rise option also includes specialised benefits for HIV, oncology, specialised radiation and external medical appliances; cover for 29 chronic conditions; and international travel cover.
